Have you been looking for things to do this winter? The cold weather sometimes makes it harder to find the motivation to get outside. But we’ve found some awesome things to do to get you out of the house and in the community. From ice skating and tubing to mountains with a number of activities, there is something for everyone on this list.
In this blog we’re going to provide you with information for daytrips and weekend getaways.
Did you know there is a 4.3 mile ice trail loop on the shores of Lake Morey in Vermont? Neither did we. This beautiful trail is home to a great time in the winter months. Take a look at more information here.
Looking to get on the ice closer to home? Check out the Puddle Dock Pond in Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth, NH. You can skate with your friends and families and they even host weekly pond hockey games. Check out more information here.
Other rinks in the area include:
Found in only a few spots across the US, we’re fortunate to have ice castles in our own community. The ice castles are a glorious attraction and have a number of add ons including sleigh rides for you and your friends and family to enjoy. Check out more information here.
We’re so lucky to have a number of mountains in Maine and New Hampshire for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Where have you visited? Many of these mountains offer snowtubing as well.
Pleasant Mountain (formerly Shawnee Peak)
Snowtubing is a fun alternative for those of us who aren’t big into skiing or snowboarding but still want to get out in the snow. Check out the local tubing facilities here.
Sometime you want to get out on the ice but it’s way too cold outside. There are a number of indoor facilities that you can check out and enjoy. Many of the indoor facilities are open throughout the year so you can get on the ice in the spring and summer too! Check out Exeter’s rink here.
“Starting a new hobby can be both exciting and intimidating, luckily ice fishing is a winter hobby that can be enjoyed with a few pieces of equipment and there are endless opportunities throughout the state” (Maine IF&W). Check out Maine’s IF&W and NH Fish and Game websites to learn more. In Maine there are free fishing weekends during the year (watch our socials, we let you know when they’re coming up) but otherwise in both states you need a permit to go fishing.
Waterfalls are even cooler in the winter time. If you’re up for the challenge, revisit our waterfall blog. Pro tip: Pack crampons and walking sticks because the trails might be icy. We visited a number of waterfalls this past spring. Check out our blog on where we went and what we saw here.
