Don’t be daft, fix that draft!
Drafts can be a pain, but the problem is often a simple fix. First, make sure the weatherstripping is in good shape. This is the seal around where the window or door closes against the frame. If it isn’t, replace it today! Weatherstripping creates an air seal and stops the flow of cold air (in the winter) or hot air (in the summer) into the house. Efficiency Maine offers a series of incentives for energy updates including air sealing. NH residents can find more information about applicable rebates on the State and NHSaves websites, too!
Cleaning of windows is also an important part of window maintenance. “Oxidation and weathering that occurs around the frames can ruin the window seals and cause fogging, air leaks, and condensation. This can have a negative impact on energy bills and cause mold issues” (Source). Yikes!
Doors play a central role in your home’s curb appeal, and if it’s the front door, maybe you want it to pop! Brighten up your front with a bright and cheery color. If your door is getting full sun for most of the day, consider a UV sealant to protect it from sun damage and bleaching.
Don’t forget to keep a close eye on the details that can also help you increase the longevity of your door. Are the hinges and locks that need greasing? If there’s glass, are there any cracks in the seals that need to be addressed? Are there any obstructions that aren’t allowing the door to close properly? Is the caulking intact? One common issue we see frequently is a squishy sill plate. This is an indication that water has gotten under the door, and has rotten the frame. You’ll want to contact a contractor to assess the damage and fix the sill. If water is getting in, chances are pests aren’t long behind. As always, if you keep an eye out for the little things and stay atop them, you can avoid costly repairs down the road.
