What is your business, and what do you do?
My name is Roxanne and I own Happy Valley Beer & Wine Garden, a seasonal restaurant nestled along Driscoll Brook on Main Street in South Berwick, ME. We are predominantly outdoor seating, with a small indoor bar, and offer a wide range of craft beer and wine with hearty sandwiches and salads. We often have live music and are very family friendly, with space for kids to hang out.
Tell us about the “AHA! Moment!” that led you to start your business.
My partner, Sam, and I grew up in South Berwick but have lived in various places around the world and the US since high school. We were living in Hawaii and had just given birth to our first daughter at the beginning of 2020. After both of us lost our jobs because of the pandemic, we decided to return to our hometown. We noticed that not a lot changed since we had left 15 years ago. We decided we wanted to stay in South Berwick to be close to family, and we really wanted to bring something to our hometown that we typically seek out when we are traveling; a casual, outdoor place to grab a beer or glass of wine, where our daughter can play and enjoy the experience too. A beer & wine garden is the perfect place for that.
What do you love about your job?
I love that we’ve created a space for community members of all generations to gather and enjoy. And of course, I love being my own boss.
What makes you different from others in your industry?
Sam and I have been very hands-on for all stages of the business, from the design to the build-out as well as managing the business side of things, running the kitchen, and serving the customers. Since returning to South Berwick, we have also both been involved in the politics surrounding the Revitalization of our Downtown and are committed to helping breathe new life to the heart of South Berwick. We see so much potential as we are situated right along the Salmon Falls River, and with its proximity to places like Portsmouth and Kittery, hope to see South Berwick as a visit and stay location.
