What is Eileen’s Attic, and what do you do?
Eileen’s Attic is a thrift/antique store in Arundel! We focus a lot on collectibles, such as toys, cards and plushies, but have a large diversity of items! We try to include a little bit of everything! From nautical, to furniture, a bit of clothing, and tons of knick-knacks, the goal is to create a shop that’s chaotic, fun, and a bit like a real life treasure hunt! It’s been important for m e to curate a store that is not only enjoyable for thrifty adults, but also for the kids that hop from store to store with their parents! I have a lot of fun upcycling and use the store as a means to encourage others from keeping the fun, the odd, the old and strange out of landfills!
Tell us about the “AHA! Moment!” that led you to start your business.
It was less of an, “Aha!” and more of an incredibly lucky opportunity that was presented to me! I was a middle school teacher that was looking to change career paths. I grew up antiquing and thrifting with my family, exploring all sorts of different shops across New England. I’ve always been a collector, and enjoyed the oddities I’d find while exploring shops! While traveling down Portland Road over the summer of 2023, I saw the building that now houses my store go up for rent! I called, happened to be the first to contact, and before I knew it, I was racing to build a shop not unlike those I loved when I was a child.
What do you love about your job?
The people, hands down! I have met so many wonderful folks while running this shop! It a blast talking to the many visitors that travel across Maine! The store has been a means to many friendships with our incredible locals. I’ve learned so much about people’s passions, collections, and families. This shop has built a community of people I’m continually grateful for!
