What is your business, and what do you do?
My business is named Aubrey’s Coffee House and Bakery. I am Aubrey, owner, baker, barista, manager, greeter, organizer, planner, recipe creator, designer, coach, deep-cleaner, handywoman, photographer, tax and bill payer, social media poster, onboarding person, and so much more. I wear all the hats and number one is being a great coach to my team and making sure everyone who walks through our door has a good experience.
Tell us about the “AHA! Moment!” that led you to start your business.
My “AHA” moment…I went to college for Elementary Education. I got my associates degree and when I was meeting with my counselor, I mentioned I had a dream to open a coffee house and bakery one day. She asked me why I was in school for becoming a teacher then and filled me in on how they offered culinary classes, too. I went home and talked to my mom and she reminded me anything is possible, you just need to work hard to save money and learn how to do it. So that’s what I did. I got two jobs at two different coffee shops to learn the in’s and out’s of how to run coffee and espresso equipment and how to deal with customers face to face (I had been running a cupcake business out of my parents house since I was 14 and already had experience with customer service, just not in the same capacity). I worked those two jobs and nannied as well to save up as much money as I could to open my business.
What do you love about your job?
My team, I love that I have found some really amazing people who respect me and work hard each and every day. It’s not easy to find hard working people these days so when you do it’s so important to cherish them and let them know they are appreciated. The freedom; I love being able to create what I want with pastries, drinks, designing my space, social media and even vacation days. As hard as being your own boss is, it does have its perks when it comes to things like that. My family; since opening my business I have seen family members way more often than before. I feel I have created a space for people to gather and enjoy going to and it makes me happy to see familiar faces walk through the door. Customers; something that warms my heart so very much is working and looking up to see a line out the door or the dining room full of smiling faces. It reminds me what all the hard work is for.
What makes you different from others in your industry?
I believe that would be our atmosphere and offerings. We have a dedicated gluten free case and offer so many gluten free and dairy free items. We take allergies very seriously and want to make sure we can try and offer something for everyone. Our atmosphere is so cozy and relaxing. We have tables and a bar area but also couches. We offer lots of different items that some may find strange to pair together but I think it’s all about balance. We’re in the works of opening our build your own salad bar, we offer all kinds of coffee and espresso drinks, tea, red bull, pastries, grab and go breakfast sandwiches and custom made orders.
What’s your Service Area?
We are located in South Berwick, Maine so anyone who comes to see us we appreciate. We have lots of regulars located in South Berwick, Eliot and Kittery, but we also have had
visitors from as far as Germany! <3
