You know we’re all about supporting local entrepreneurs as they build their businesses within our community. Send over your faves so we can get to work giving them a shout-out!
This month, we double-dog-dare you to check out Krista’s business, At Your Dog’s Service.
What is your business, and what do you do?
I am a professional dog walker and I own At Your Dog’s Service [AYDS]. However, the term “walker” can also mean hike leader, jogging buddy, or enrichment coordinator based on my clients’ needs! My energetic canine clients really enjoy our group hikes and for dogs that need solo visits, I can customize those to meet their needs, whether it be jogging, maintaining a training plan for a behavioral challenge, or something else.
Tell us about the “AHA Moment!” that led you to start your business:
I’m more of a “slow realization”-type person! Dogs have been a big part of my life since high school, whether I was volunteering, working in pet care, or taking training classes with my personal dogs. I slowly morphed into the dog nerd I am today, with our 2020 adoption, Arya, tipping the scales into “crazy dog lady” territory as she inspired me to dive deeper into training and behavior research to help her overcome some behavioral challenges and learn to thrive.
Molding that passion into AYDS developed through my experience working at the NH Small Business Development Center (NH SBDC) and going back to school for a masters in recreation management at UNH. I was constantly surrounded by people who were deeply passionate about their work and I realized I had to figure out how to do that as well. As it turns out, there are a lot of parallels between recreation management and pet care! With the confidence and business management knowledge that I gained through those roles – and tremendous support from friends and family – At Your Dog’s Service came to be.
What do you love about your job?
Everything! But I absolutely love what I get to do for the canine kiddos. I can take their exercise and emotional needs and guardian’s goals and roll all that up into a fun excursion that breaks up their day and promotes their well being.
What makes you different from others in your industry?
I’m really impressed by the variety and quality of services pet guardians have these days, especially in our area. I’m proud to bring my years of experience and education with dogs of all sorts of personalities and in a variety of environments, as well as the behavior lens I’ve adopted over the years, to best serve the dogs in our community. Every visit is more than making sure my canine clients get out to potty during the day but a chance to be a dog, have fun, train, connect, and more.
What’s your service area?
Rochester; Somersworth; and parts of Dover, Barrington, Farmington and surrounding areas.
