This month brings a special shop to the forefront of our monthly spotlight, and we’re really pumped to share it with you. Not only is this place becoming a well known local treat stop, but after being featured in local wedding magazines and publications like The Knot and Maine Weddings, The Sandpiper Cake Shop is taking off! With beautifully handcrafted cakes and a varied selection of homemade cookies – Sasha has made an 8th Wonder of the World right here in Maine! Personally, we think you should check out some of her geode cake creations… they’re fantastic!
What is your business, and what do you do?
Hi, my name is Sasha and I own a boutique cake studio in York, The Sandpiper Cake Shop. I work as a baker and specialty cake designer.
Tell us about the “AHA! Moment!” that led you to start your business:
I was very fortunate to gain experience in various different types of bakeries, under many different bakers. Working for others, you lack a bit of freedom in creating a product you feel could really be of service to others! I noticed that I had a niche in art and cake design, and the wedding industry gave me the opportunity to let that flourish! I spent every second not at work, working for myself to practice my craft. Although it wasn’t a specific moment that led me to open The Sandpiper, it was a dream I knew was within reach and I intended to make happen.
What do you love about your job?
So many things! Creating new recipes and finding success in them after countless attempts is one of my favorites. I love being able to offer unique flavors to fit different palates. However, the very best part of my job is the joy it brings to others. Knowing I am able to be a small part of so many celebrations, and provide them with a cake or pastry that elevates their experience on a special occasion is a wonderful thing.
What makes you different from others in your industry?
One of the greatest things about the cake industry is that every baker/artist is different in their own way. This allows for clients to have the option of choosing a bakery that they feel speaks to their taste and preferences. I am a solo baker and a very small business, so I like to offer a very personal experience when booking with me. My cakes and pastries are baked, designed and delivered by me each time which is often a bit different than your typical high volume bakery.
What’s your Service Area?
I like to stay within about 75 miles of my shop here in York.
Where can customers learn more about your business?
A great place to find out more information would be my website or any social media platform such as Instagram and Facebook.
I am also featured on The Knot and Wedding Wire.
