Warning: We are not to be held responsible for any sudden cravings
you may experience while reading this post!
Prepare your tastebuds folks, because we’ve discovered a local eatery in South Berwick which has knocked our socks off! Locally grown and sourced food just tastes better, and if you don’t believe that… we’re absolutely challenging you to give this reimagined kitchen a try.
You know, strictly for research purposes.
Chef Benjamin Hasty and Jennifer Fecteau (pictured left) launched Engrain in mid-summer of 2020, which in itself was a feat considering how many businesses were struggling or shuttering amid the new global pandemic.
However, Maine resilience, resourcefulness, and community support tends to win out over outside influences… global pandemics included.
They operate in the location formerly known to plenty of locals & visitors alike as “Thistle Pig”. While the little porkchop chapter has closed after 6 successful years, Engrain has stepped into place with a hugely positive reception.
Their goal is providing locally sourced ingredients and crafting delicious in-house meals with a variety of ways to enjoy. The menu choices literally shift with the seasons, and carefully chosen produce and complimentary flavors are paired! Just scroll down a little further to see what we mean!
Craving a hearty plate? They have it.
Looking for a flavor packed bowl? They have it.
Wanting lighter fare? Smoothies are a big hit!
Diet restrictions? Gluten intolerance? Keto consumption? Ingredient allergy?
They’ll totally work within limitations to ensure you get a healthy and hearty meal in your belly.
These pictures just make you want to eat, don’t they?!
With the advent of social gathering becoming introduced again (in moderation and safety of course), they offer dine-in for customers. Don’t want to sit inside? Weather permitting, you can take your order to-go and enjoy a stroll around Downtown South Berwick instead.
Did you forget your lunch at home before you left for work?
No problem. Order online at their website (it’s set up beautifully to showcase dishes and to streamline orders without fuss!) and pick it up in a jiffy!
Too busy to get together healthy meals during the week?
Yep… you may have guessed that we’re about to tell you they have Meal Prep plans available for delivery, typically Mon pm/Tue am each week.
Bonus: Select gym locations are also available for delivery! Certain areas have a delivery fee- check their website for detailed information.
Still not enough?! Engrain also offers catering services!

Now for a personal spin on this amazing dining experience.
We don’t rave about a place we don’t enjoy, whether it’s local or not.
Catherine says “If you’re looking for something to warm your soul, the Slow Cooked Beef Bowl is the way to go. It’s wholesome. It’s hearty. It’s the perfect portion, every bite is a flavor explosion. Feeling creative? Build your own! We prefer to let the chefs do what they do best – pair local ingredients and fresh flavors into a mouthwatering profile that makes your tastebuds go WOW!”
So there you have it. That kind of descriptive prose to food is enough to get us right back over to Engrain for lunch or dinner! Especially now that Autumn is ushering in warm days and chilly nights… that Slow Cooked Beef Bowl is a perfect pairing for takeaway dinner at home – fuzzy socks, a fire in the wood stove, and this hearty bowl in your hands. Perfection!
