As we move into 2025, I wanted to pop over and leave you a couple reminders, because the next big holiday we have is April 15th. Just kidding, the only person who likes that “holiday” is your Tax Accountant! If you are a Maine Resident and have yet to apply for your Homestead Exemption, now is the time.
For anyone who has owned their home for 12 months or more, as of March 30, 2024, you’re eligible (ex: if you bought your home on/after April 1, 2024, you cannot apply yet, but you can apply for next year’s exemption). You can find the form here, on the State Website. You can also get a paper copy at your town hall. If you’d like me to mail you a paper copy, just ask!
There are other exemptions you may be eligible for, such as the Renewable Energy and Veteran ones. You can find a full list, here, on the State’s Website. These forms must be returned to your local assessor before April 1, 2025. The sooner the better. FYI make a little note to yourself to check your tax bill to ensure they apply the exemption. My town actually missed mine, and I was able to get them to pro-rate the discount back to me when I caught the error.
New Hampshire has some Property Tax Relief Programs based on income, as well as the Current Use Exemption for parcels of 10 acres or more enrolled in the program. I love nerding out over Current Use, so if you have questions, call me!
